On March 25th our year 5 and year 6 students visited Ahhaa science centre in Tartu. Students learned about DNA and even extracted their DNA in a workshop. They could see their own DNA as a result of a simple hands-on experiment. In addition to this, students could go on a very high bike ride, walk through an unsteady tunnel, experience a free fall and wander in a labyrinth of mirrors. They could also examine the life of ants, visit exhibition „Aha, Illusions!“ and math exhibition „Aha, cube!“. It was an educational and fun day for everyone.

On the first week of spring our students from year 1 to 4 greeted the budding spring. Students from the second form played a joyful song on small zithers. Students recited a poem by Leelo Tungal "Küll ta tuleb!", (in rough translation “Just wait, they are coming”) which was dedicated to birds of spring on their way back home. Students could listen to bird songs by barn swallow, skylark, northern lapwing and chaffinch. Children tried to copy their songs in fast human speech. It was a fun way to mark the beginning of spring.

The whole week from March 11 we celebrated the Estonian Mother Tongue Day. We had lots of interesting events happening in our school! First of all, a well-known Estonian writer and poet known as Contra visited us. He read to our students many of his humorous poems, and the students really enjoyed that. We also had another visitor who was more from an academic field. He was a linguist named Szilard Tibor Toth who works at the University of Tartu. He introduced us languages that are related to Estonian.

Our students from year six studied the quality of air around our school house.  In order to find that out they had to ask lichens and moss. The mini-expedition took place during a natural science lesson and outside, naturally. Students found out that on average there are about four to five species of moss or lichens growing on one linden tree (also known as tilia).  And the conclusion, based on the students’ findings was that the air that we breath here is very clean.
