Mother Tongue Day 18. March sekretar

The whole week from March 11 we celebrated the Estonian Mother Tongue Day. We had lots of interesting events happening in our school! First of all, a well-known Estonian writer and poet known as Contra visited us. He read to our students many of his humorous poems, and the students really enjoyed that. We also had another visitor who was more from an academic field. He was a linguist named Szilard Tibor Toth who works at the University of Tartu. He introduced us languages that are related to Estonian.

Our youngest students took part in the regional Estonian language competition and were very successful.  Our older students took part in the e-dictation organised by Vikerraadio (the Estonian Public Broadcasting radio station) and also a literary contest “ Estonia 101” organised by our own Alutaguse county. In addition to that, we had a within-school Estonian competition. The best of the best in knowing Estonia were, from the youngest age group, Liam Andrew, Marie-Eliise, and Sander, from the next school level there were Sirlin, Iris and Alyn and among the older students Merlin, Catlyn, Isabel, and Christin. Congratulations!

At the end of the Mother Tongue Week the whole school family saw a play by a youth theatre from Jõhvi Culture and Community centre. The name of the very amusing play was “Undaunted babysitters” directed by Raili Tamm.

All on all it was a great week to remind us all of the beauty and importance of the Estonian language.
